The possibility of requesting and obtaining indulgences is an integral and relevant part of the tradition of Jubilees. «It is no coincidence that in ancient times the term “mercy” was interchangeable with that of “indulgence”, precisely because it intends to express the fullness of God's forgiveness that knows no bounds» writes Pope Francis in the Bull of Indiction of the Jubilee 2025 (Spes non confundit § 23).
“Pilgrims of Hope” is the title of the resource made available by the National Service for Youth Pastoral (Snpg) of the CEI, in view of the Jubilee 2025, to accompany, explains the director, Don Riccardo Pincerato, “the diocesan officials, educators, teachers, heads of associations, movements and institutes of male and female life, providing tools and reflections that can help to fully live the Jubilee experience”.
“The Jubilee can become an opportunity to knock on the doors of rich countries, including Italy, so that they forgive the debts of poor countries, which have no way of repaying them”. Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and President of the CEI, is convinced of this. In introducing the Permanent Council of Italian Bishops, he recalled how in poor countries “millions of people live in living conditions devoid of dignity”. “It should be noted that the debts of States are sometimes contracted with private individuals: the Church cannot fail to make its voice heard so that social equity is established and the few super-rich do not take advantage of their advantageous position to influence politics for their own interests”, added Zuppi. Without forgetting, as Pope Francis recently recalled, that there is “a new form of inequality of which we are increasingly aware today: ecological debt”, in particular between the North and the South. Hence the need to “identify effective ways to convert the foreign debt of poor countries into effective, creative and responsible policies and programs for integral human development”.
