The perpetual or Wednesday lamp

Who among us has not lit a candle at least once
in front of a statue of the Virgin or a Saint?
In the Pious Union of the Transit of San Giuseppe for decades
there is the initiative of the "perpetual or Wednesday lamp" in honor of Saint Joseph. The symbolic meaning of the lamp is closely connected to the symbolism of light. Christ himself defines himself as the synthesis of light: He is "the light of the world, the one that illuminates every man who enters life".
In the custom of the "Lamp of St. Joseph", the faithful who join this initiative of the Pious Union want to express an act of trust in the goodness of God and in the intercession of St. Joseph and testify to the vigilance of their faith through the symbol of light. In the Gospel, Jesus uses parables to explain how the lamp lit in the house is an image of the person who watches, who is ready to carry out the suggestions of the Spirit without fear and anxiety caused by darkness. It seems beautiful to us to point out how in the parable of the lost coin (Lk 15,8f) - where God's love for the lost is represented, a Love that seeks and forgives - the woman lights up the whole house with a lamp; in the same way the Lord with his light
he is willing to seek and embrace the sinner reached in the deepest darkness of his sin. Another parable is that of the foolish virgins and the wise virgins with their oil lamps:
it is a call to be vigilant so that with the eyes of faith we can be able to notice Jesus passing through our lives.
Another note on the lit lamp is given by the image of the Apocalypse, when it compares the church to a lamp that illuminates the path of the community. Too often we forget that Saint Joseph was declared by the pontifical magisterium "Patron of the universal Church", this Church which is "light of the people", is "mother and teacher" of all humanity. The lamp in honor of Saint Joseph, Patron Saint of the dying, can also be defined as a "flower that does not wither" for the dearly departed. There are people who have paid a fee for the "perpetual lamp" to burn perpetually in front of the statue of Saint Joseph. Other people wish to have a lamp lit in St. Joseph for every Wednesday of the year or just one Wednesday within a month, or, every day for an entire month.

The pages of Gratitude

To you, O Blessed Joseph, we turn...

GINA, Naples • I am a devotee of Saint Joseph and I pray to him daily. I was in the hospital undergoing surgery for a large kidney stone. Shortly before the operation the surgeon told me that due to the size of the stone there was a risk that the functionality of the kidney would be compromised. I prayed to Saint Joseph with all my heart that everything would go well, promising that I would bear witness to the grace obtained and help the works of the Pious Union. Everything went well and my kidney works perfectly.
CASULA GIULIANA, Rome • I heartily thank Saint Joseph for having helped my family overcome many adversities: he freed my house, which was foreclosed by loan sharks; made my daughter go back to her studies (gaining three years) and my husband started working again. I bear witness to this, so that others may also feel encouraged to turn to Him in order to benefit from his paternal protection and obtain unexpected graces. I hope that the great Patriarch continues to intercede for us with the Lord so that he may grant us health of soul and body.
FIORETTI ROSA CARMELA, Ruvo di Puglia (BA) • I am writing you these few lines to announce a great grace given to my family. I prayed to Saint Joseph for my daughter Giuseppina who could not have children. Saint Joseph heard me! Twins are arriving next March. Thank you, Saint Joseph!
CANEPA ANGELA, Sant'Antioco (CA) • Dear Director, I would be grateful if my praise and gratitude to God for all the graces he has granted me through our Saint Joseph were published in the column “The pages of gratitude”. Always trusting in Jesus and Our Lady to always protect my beloved family.
BERTOSA MARIA, Peia (BG) • Dear Father, I have been devoted to Saint Joseph for many years and I can assure you that if I had to list everything I have obtained from the paternal protection of the Saint, I would never finish. With this writing of mine I intend to thank Saint Joseph, with Jesus and with Mary, and ask for prayers so that he continues to follow and protect my entire family. Again I thank you gratefully.
ALLEVI FABIA DOMITILLA, Macerata (BG) • Reverend Director, I have been a member of the Pious Union of the Transit of San Giuseppe since last April and I would like to thank the Saint for a grace received. I was operated on last September for infiltrating breast cancer and I faced the operation by totally entrusting myself to San Giuseppe. The histological examination showed that the lymph nodes examined were free from metastases and therefore the chemotherapy I am undergoing is light. I am sure that the intercession of my great Protector was decisive and for this reason I want to show my gratitude by offering for a lamp to Saint Joseph every Wednesday of the year. I devoutly greet you with filial affection.

RIZZI ROSINA RAVASIO, Anzano Lombardo • Dear Don Mario, I have been devoted to Saint Joseph for many years. It would be my desire - if possible - to publicly thank this great Saint who obtained so many graces for me from the Lord with the recitation of the Holy Mantle. What St. Teresa says is truly true: "whatever grace is asked of St. Joseph will certainly be granted." Thanks and best regards.
FUSCO MARIA, Pontecagnano • Dear director, with infinite gratitude and devotion I thank Saint Joseph for his constant presence and for the graces obtained.
Years ago, a friend of mine gave me a copy of the booklet "Pray, pray, pray" and thanks to her I discovered how great the goodness of Saint Joseph is. I began to invoke him by reciting the Holy Mantle, then the novena and then the triduum, asking in prayer to safeguard the health of my parents and all my loved ones.
I want to tell everyone to always invoke Blessed Joseph, who can do everything with the Lord and never abandons anyone, with the trust that Saint Teresa of Jesus recommends to us: "Whoever does not believe should put himself to the test, so that he may be persuaded".
Whoever prays to Saint Joseph with faith is always heard. I ask you to pray for my entire family. Thank you.
LUCARELLI MARIAROSARIA, Naples • Reverend director Don Mario, I am sending my offer for a scholarship, a promise made to Saint Joseph with the recitation of the S. Manto, to help my daughter find a small outlet for her very precarious job. Saint Joseph listened to me like so many other times. I want to tell all the people who find themselves in great difficulty and tribulation for their children and family members to entrust themselves with faith to St. Joseph, to Jesus, to the Virgin Mary and to saints like Giuseppe Moscati, who never fail to help us , if invoked with great faith. I also take this opportunity to thank you for the wishes you sent me for my name day. A cordial greeting to you and to all the staff of the Pia Unione.

CALOISI DANIELA, Rome • I received many graces through the intercession of Saint Joseph and the Madonna, praying with the Sacred Mantle and reciting the Holy Rosary. They had revoked the civil disability recognized at the time. I therefore turned with trust to the dear Saint and the Virgin Mary and the cause I had undertaken for the validation of my disability was successful. Thanks to Saint Joseph and Our Lady for their help.
DEIANA LINA, Mariotto (Bari) • For many years I have been devoted to Saint Joseph, to whom I have always recommended myself with faith and trust. My brother recently underwent a high-risk operation. I asked for the help of Saint Joseph and everything went well. As promised, I send my testimony of the grace received so that the Saint may be increasingly known and loved by all together with his Holy Bride, the Most Holy Mary..
MARIA, Valentano • I wanted to point out, after a year, a grace that my daughter received through the intercession of Saint Joseph. Even though she already had a degree, she wanted to become a nurse, but to do so she had to pass the entrance course. With the help of our dear Saint she succeeded very well. A year has already passed, there is still a little way to go but with the help of God and Saint Joseph we hope that she will be able to fulfill her dream. Help me too, you of the Pious Union, with your prayers. I entrust it to Saint Joseph for his future work and for his married life. Best regards.
GIANNONE SANTINA, Australia • Dear friends of the Pious Union, I am writing a little late but it is with great joy in my heart that I tell you the good news that my son and my daughter-in-law, after ten long years, have become mothers and fathers. I'll let you imagine the profound joy at the birth of little Pietro, beautiful and healthy. Thanks to Jesus, the Madonna and Saint Joseph for blessing our families with this precious gift, long hoped for, long awaited. Many warm regards to everyone.

SBARAGLIA LUCIANA, Subiaco • Dear Director, I want to thank Saint Joseph for the many graces he obtained for me in three years of prayer with the Holy Mantle: much health and work for my family members who I have placed everyone under his protection and for having done find a job for my son-in-law like he wanted so much. I thank him in prayer and I will never get tired. I am a devotee of Saint Joseph and one of your associates and it is my wish to thank him by sending an offering for your works in favor of the poor that you support with your initiatives. Always pray for me and my family.
ANNA MARIA S., Cittanova • Dear Father, I am writing to thank Saint Joseph for the great grace received through his intercession. Last March I was hospitalized for a serious form of pneumonia and one day I was particularly down. I invoked Saint Joseph and he listened to my invocations. Thank you for everything Saint Joseph, who always listened to my prayers even on other difficult occasions.
TARGIONI MARIO, Abbadia S. Salvatore • Dear Don Mario, I would like to thank Saint Joseph for his intercession with the Lord for a personal grace, which highlights his great providence, obtained by reciting the Holy Mantle. However, I also want to thank Our Lady. I rely more and more on Jesus, Joseph and Mary.
PRINO SILVIA V. ROGATO, Saluzzo • Reverend Father, I would like to thank the great St. Joseph for having listened to my prayers. My son found a job and is very happy.
After much prayer and non-continuous and definitive work, this time it went well. I once again say thank you to dear St. Joseph and send the second installment of what I promised, as I was unable to do it in one go. Always pray for my children and grandchildren. Pray for me and a prayer of suffrage for my dear deceased husband.

PIERMATTEI MASSIMO, Rome • I write this letter because having obtained from St. Joseph the spiritual and material graces requested of him with the prayers of the Holy Mantle and the Triduum in his honor, I wish to thank him. I would like this letter of mine to be published in the magazine "La Santa Crociata" so that those who turn to St. Joseph have confidence because (as the supplication states) it has never been heard of anyone invoking his protection and asking for his help without being fulfilled. Grateful for his intercession, goodness and consolation in difficult moments, I thank him again and invite those who read this letter of mine to always turn to him with all their heart, so that St. Joseph intercedes with Jesus and obtains the longed-for graces.
DE JONG GIUSEPPE, Holland • I have been a member of the Pious Union for many years and I read "The Holy Crusade" with pleasure. I am writing to you because of a great grace received through the intercession of St. Joseph. When my first granddaughter was born (1995) the doctors announced that the baby would not live for more than six months and that if she survived she would never be able to walk, sit and have a normal life. I prayed to St. Joseph with confidence, not reserving much prayer for doctors. Now my niece Claire Maria is 16 years old, she attends middle school and plays sports. I heartily thank St. Joseph for his continued protection. I wish to place my niece under the protection of the Saint and enroll her in the Pious Union. Cordial greetings..
A DEVOTEE • For years I have been a devotee and member of the Pious Union and every time I invoke St. Joseph it is a great emotion. One day I received an image from you where it was written, among other things: ... "at the first appearance of a difficulty I speak to St. Joseph and I immediately have the feeling of being heard". I always carry this image with me and always think of these words. I thank St. Joseph for the gift of motherhood that he obtained for me. For months I had been due for surgery which, due to fear and other reasons, I had been putting off. I began to recite the "Sacred Mantle" for the first time and on the thirtieth day, Ash Wednesday, I had the surgery. All went well. Invoke St. Joseph with faith; trust in him and you will be heard. May Jesus, Joseph and Mary always protect us.

CATANZARO GIUSEPPINA, Rome • Dear Director, I would like to thank St. Giuseppe because, as in all other difficult situations, he was close to me and helped my husband recover from septicemia after 10 days of post-operative intensive care. I trust in your prayers for the success of another surgery which he will have to undergo soon. Best regards.
CHIARONI ADA, Pianello Lario • I heartily thank St. Joseph because after praying to him with the Holy Mantle and the novena, my daughter passed the entrance exam to the professional nursing school. I now pray to the dear Saint that my daughter can become a good nurse and that he protects her and my entire family. My mother has been a member of yours for many years, now ninety years old and in need of assistance and while I keep her company I read her The Holy Crusade; a very beautiful newspaper that is very good for the heart. Also on behalf of my mother I am sending an offer for a Holy Mass of thanksgiving. Thanks again to Holy Mary and St. Joseph for their intercession with Jesus and thanks to all of you for your prayers.
SANTORO GIULIA, Rome • I am indebted to Saint Joseph for many graces obtained. The latest, in chronological order, concerns a young girl, hospitalized in a department of the hospital where she works, due to serious physical deterioration. Having no appetite, she was under strict medical supervision and artificially fed. I began the prayer of the Holy Mantle, asking Saint Joseph for help for this girl and for her parents who suffered from seeing her in that worrying condition. One day, during my morning shift, at lunch, the girl asked to get up and eat in the company of the nurses. The unusual request was granted and from that day, gradually, the girl began to eat regularly again for her own good and for the joy of everyone, parents, doctors and nurses. Saint Joseph, once again, heard my prayers.
