Anyone arriving in Rome always stops for at least a moment of reflection in front of the Altare della Patria, in front of the monument of the Unknown Soldier. At the sides of the always flaming brazier, two soldiers keep watch, twenty-four hours a day, as honor guards for those fallen for their country.
Even for members of the Pious Union of the Transit of San Giuseppe there is the possibility of being guards of honor for San Giuseppe. We do not keep vigil in front of a dead person, but in front of someone who played a very important role for the baby Jesus and the Madonna and who now intercedes for many brothers who have reached the goal of existence.
In this initiative, the members of the Pious Union decide to commit themselves for an hour a day or a week or a month to being in the company of Saint Joseph in offering acts of love and emotional solidarity to the dying and to those who struggle in life.
In this hour it is not a question of being on our knees or in prayer, but of inserting a particular intention into work or chores, so that they are carried out with that intensity of loving attention that Saint Joseph would have committed in his life to Nazareth. A mother, whether at home or at work, often thinks about her children. The same is true for our hour: we begin with a small prayer and conclude with an invocation to Saint Joseph. The very simple methods of joining are indicated on a report card that we send to members who want to commit to dedicating their hour of kindness and solidarity towards the dying.
The servant of God, Professor Giorgio La Pira, the "holy mayor", maintained - and often repeated it - that prayers and good deeds, even if silent or hidden, not only rise to God, but descend into the underground currents of human history to warm the roots of history itself and thus allow the fruits of goodness, peace and justice to ripen.
Readers who wish to subscribe to the Ora di San Giuseppe can send their membership to the Pious Union indicating, obviously, name and surname, the time (from the hour... to the hour...) that they intend to dedicate to honor on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. of St. Joseph, keeping his attention alive on behalf of the dying.
For our part, we will send the report card, which will indicate the chosen time, the opening and closing prayer.
