Time is always running away from us and does not help us remember that we are guests of life and, when the granting of usufruct ends, we must move elsewhere. Moving involves detachment from things, but above all from people, affections, relationships and memories. Thus begins an endless chapter to be written with the light of hope.
Packing your bags to take the ferry too many times is a space to be experienced in solitude. It is an unexplored birth for a new way of existing. This is why Don Guanella called death "mother". This death, with a fearful face, however hides in its physiognomy the feelings of a mother who guarantees that in that moment we will be surrounded not only by the faces of our friends, but also by the welcoming smile of the baptized who already live in the light of God.
Don Guanella wanted to ensure that alongside the dying there was a cordial and supportive participation in the ordeal of separation from this land and founded the Pious Union of the Transit of Saint Joseph with the aim of invoking Saint Joseph to reciprocate the support he enjoyed upon entering the eternity having Jesus and his mother, Mary, next to him.
Don Guanella had a realistic sentence written on the portal of the Pianello Lario cemetery: «What you are, we will be tomorrow, even we pilgrims on this earth». That warning was an invitation to enter that town of hope, which is a cemetery, to share in prayer a moment of communion with those who preceded us on the frontier of eternity. In this light of shared hope, the Pious Union not only accompanies with solidarity prayer those who are on the journey towards eternity, but continues to keep contacts alive also with our deceased with the prayer of Perpetual Suffrage.
This membership in the Suffrage Union can be done starting today for our dearly departed. When registering, it will be a good idea to add the date of death, so that on the anniversary day a special memory will be ensured in the celebration of the Holy Mass.
Faith tells us that our life, lived in this land, "will not be canceled but will continue to live in another way", in a world without tears and with constant and supportive smiles of friendship with the people we loved and with the poor strangers we helped with our offerings.
