by Don Bruno Capparoni
Don Guanella had arrived in Pianello del Lario probably on November 9, 1881, and after a few months he learned of a pilgrimage, organized by the nearby parish of Dongo, to the Sanctuary of Saint Jerome Emiliani in Somasca. The date of the pilgrimage was April 23, 1882. He found it a propitious opportunity to make himself known to the priests and faithful of the upper Lake Como and immediately devoted himself to writing a booklet to introduce pilgrims to the figure of Saint Jerome Emiliani (1486-1537), to whose tomb in Somasca, near Lecco, the pilgrimage was directed. The title is Visit to an illustrious figure, Saint Jerome Emiliani, in his hermitage in Somasca.
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Lugano is the place where Bishop Aurelio Bacciarini is remembered. His tomb is there, where his holy remains await the hour of resurrection; his words, engraved in a mosaic, seem to resonate there: "For you, Crux benedicta, expecto resurrectionem vitae" (Through you, O blessed Cross, I await the resurrection of life). Therefore in Lugano on Saturday 13 September there was a concelebration in his memory and to invoke his beatification from God.
